This is the perfect trip for all who like photographing birds and hiking!

We start by car from Longyearbyen and drive out towards Mine 3, where we will pass the famous Svalbard Global Seed Vault. Then we enter Bjørndalen, the Bear Valley, where we start our hike to the birds. We first cross a river and then start walking up the mountain towards the towering Fuglefjella (Bird Mountain). There we can see thousands of nesting birds. The main season with the most activity is from June to mid-August.

We have good chances to see some of the Svalbard Reindeers and Arctic Foxes on the way to the top of the bird cliff.

When we reach the plateau at approximately 430 metres above the sea level, we stand on top of the biggest bird cliff in the area and get a nice view over Isfjorden and its surrounding glaciers in the distance.

This tour includes crossing of a river and hiking. You need to be in good physical condition. We recommend good hiking boots, a wind- and waterproof jacket and something warm to put on once we reach the windy top.

This is Polar bear area: Groups must stay together.

Duration: 9 hours in total. Hiking time up the mountain takes approximately 3 hours.

Included in the price: Transportation, experienced guides with necessary safety equipment, tea/coffee and cookies /expedition food for lunch

Capacity: max 8 persons (minimum age of 14)

Language: English, German, others can be arranged on request

Recommended photo equipment: Wide angle lens and strong zoom lens for the birds.

You will start your trip in Longyeardalen by hiking up the east side of Sarkofagen alongside your guide during this full day small group tour. The path will bring you alongside the glacier Larsbreen and through its moraine material. On top of Sarkofagen you'll have the opportunity to enjoy a cup of coffee or tea and some cookies. You'll also have enough time to enjoy and look upon the view over Longyearbyen, the glaciers, and Isfjorden.

This tour includes a glacier crossing with mini spikes and hiking. No previous glacier knowledge is required. You need to be in good physical shape to participate in this tour. We recommend good hiking boots, a wind and waterproof jacket and warm layers to put on once we reach the top of Sarkofagen (512 meters). Keep in mind that this is a polar bear inhabited area. Groups must stay together.

In addition to landscape photography, the tour offers sights of small waterfalls and plenty of photographic opportunities for guests interested in geology. Then your trip continues southwards down to the glacier Longyearbreen, where you will put on some mini spikes and be introduced to the safety basics on glaciers and meltwater channels. On the way back down the valley you may find some Paleogene fossils in the loose moraine sediments of the glacier with fantastic detailing and preservation. During the descent on Longyearbreen you will also see the eastern slope of Nordenskiöldfjellet to your left-hand site, a mountain that reaches 1050 meters and contains some snow fields even throughout the summer.

Please note: This trip is going up on a glacier and also the way back from Sarkofagen takes us on a glacier. So we may change the route depending on Snow - Avalanche conditions.

The tour brings us from Nordenskiöld Land northwards to Dickson Land on the other side of Isfjorden. We leave Longyearbyen and Adventfjorden by ship and sail towards north east across Isfjorden, where we can see Tempelfjorden and its characteristic mountain slopes in the distance before we enter Billefjorden. From here on, all the area to our right hand side belongs to the Sassen-Bünsow Land National park. Northern fulmars, seagulls, auks, and puffins are just a few bird species that might pass by the ship. At the end of Billefjorden, we enter Adolfbukta where we slowly proceed towards the glacier Nordenskiöldbreen. Small pieces of ice swimming in the bay remind us that the glacier, in all its beauty, also bears a danger as it slowly but steadily moves and calves into the ocean. Therefore, we enjoy the scenery in safe distance and see if we can spot seals or polar bears.

Lunch will be served on the ship before we make our way towards Pyramiden at the edge of Mimerbukta. Pyramiden, which literally means “the pyramid” is a small abandoned Russian town named by Swedish geologists after the characteristic pyramid-like mountain-top nearby.

We take you on two guided tours in Pyramiden: One given by a local Russian guide who will introduce you to the history of the ghost town. The second tour has its focus on photography and provides the guest with the necessary time to picture the coal mining installations and the old buildings from outside as well as inside. Hundreds of Black-legged kittywakes have taken over some of the buildings and offer shots that might be even too close for the zoom lens! The tour includes one overnight stay in Pyramiden Hotel. Please see the schedule below for more details:

Day 1

  • Pick-up at your accommodation place in Longyearbyen
  • 09:00 Departure from Longyearbyen harbor with M/S Polar Girl
  • Barbecue on the ship at Nordenskiöldbreen glacier

  • Introduction round
  • Tour with the local guide and setting up the groups

  • Group 2 starts at the southern part
  • Dinner at the Hotel
  • Extra time for landscape photography

Day 2

  • Breakfast
  • Group 1 and 2 head out to finish the round

Practical Information

This tour includes transport by ship across the open waters of Isfjorden. Wind and strong waves can cause seasickness. We recommend a wind- and waterproof jacket and something warm to put on while on the ship. No credit cards or foreign currency is accepted in Pyramiden Hotel. The hotel is the only building in use, there are no shops. Snacks and drinks as well as souvenirs can be purchased in the hotel and camera batteries can be recharged.

Pyramiden is an abandoned town and consequently Polar bear area: Groups must stay together on both guided tours.

We leave Pyramiden shortly after arrival and start hiking towards the camp, approximately 8 km west of the town. We walk through Mimerdalen until we reach our camp at a small lake, where we set up our camp and introduce you to the polar bear safety basics for camping in the wilderness. After that we hike up the slope of Yggdrasilkampen in order to get the view over the area: Odindalen, Munindalen, Mimerdalen, Pyramiden, and the glacier we passed by with the ship earlier that day. It is worth bringing the tripod up here as the view invites you to compile some panoramas. From here we can also see some of the places we are going to visit the next day. Please see the schedule below for more details.

On day three, after we had breakfast, we will leave and hike back to Pyramiden where we will have dinner.
